A Conscious Traveler’s Guide to Protecting Paradise
Traveling to Indonesia especially remote, wild places like Raja Ampat,is not just about what you bring with you. It’s about what you choose not to bring.
Raja Ampat is one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth. Its coral reefs, mangroves, and island communities are incredibly resilient and incredibly vulnerable. There is not prober waste system here (YET). No recycling trucks. No easy way to “deal with it later.”
Everything you bring in stays here, unless you take responsibility for it.
At Indo SeaSpirit, we believe that packing consciously is the first act of respect toward the places that welcome us. This guide isn’t about luxury or convenience, it’s about traveling lightly, thoughtfully, and in a way that keeps Raja Ampat wild for generations to come.
Pack with care - Less Is Always More
Remote travel is different from popular easy travel destinations. There are no shops around the corner, and there shouldn’t be. Overpacking creates waste, and waste has nowhere to go.
Before you pack, ask yourself
Do I really need this?
And what happens to it when I leave?
Choose durable, reusable, and natural items whenever possible.
Clothing - Protect Yourself Without Harming the Ocean

Long Sleeves Over Sunscreen
The most eco-friendly sunscreen is no sunscreen at all.
Instead of swimming in chemicals that damage coral reefs, pack:
Long-sleeve rashguards
UV-protective leggings
Light, breathable long-sleeve shirts
Wide-brim hats or caps
Covering up protects both your skin and the reef, and it works better than constantly reapplying lotion in the sea.
If You Use Sunscreen — Make It Reef-Safe
If sunscreen is unavoidable, it must be reef-safe:
No oxybenzone
No octinoxate
No parabens
No microplastics
Choose mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and apply them at least 20 minutes before entering the water. If you apply it just before the water, you will not protect your skin and the product washes straight away to the ocean which mean no benefits for you, waste of money waste for the nature.
Toiletries - 100% Natural, Nothing Else
Whatever goes into the water here goes straight back to the reef.
Pack only:
Biodegradable soap
Natural shampoo bars
Reef-safe toothpaste
Solid deodorants
Menstrual cups or reusable hygiene products
Avoid anything with:
Synthetic fragrances
Microbeads
Harsh chemicals
Even “a little bit” adds up when hundreds of travelers arrive each year.
Zero Plastic Is Not a Trend — It’s a Necessity

There are no landfills on the islands. Plastic bottles, wrappers, and packaging often end up burned or drifting into the sea.
What to bring instead:
Refillable water bottle
Cloth shopping bag
Refillable toiletry containers
Snacks in reusable or paper packaging
What not to bring
Single-use plastic bottles
Individually wrapped snacks
Wet wipes
Plastic bags
If you bring plastic in, pack it out. If you are able to bring it here fully, you are able to bring it out empty.
Health & Personal Essentials (Smart, Not Excessive)
Remote travel means self-reliance, but not overconsumption.
Pack responsibly:
Personal medications
Reef-safe insect repellent (natural or essential-oil based)
Small personal first aid kit
Reusable bandages or cloth wraps
Avoid disposable medical plastics whenever possible.
Respectful Travel Starts Before You Arrive
What you pack reflects how you travel.
When you arrive prepared, you reduce pressure on:
Local communities
Marine ecosystems
Fragile island infrastructure
Responsible packing supports:
Community-based tourism
Conservation efforts
A future where Raja Ampat remains untamed
Travel Like a Guest, Not a Consumer
At Indo SeaSpirit, we don’t believe in conquering destinations. We believe in earning our place in them.
Traveling to Raja Ampat is a privilege. Packing responsibly is the first step toward honoring that privilege.
If you’re willing to slow down, simplify, and carry only what truly matters, the islands will give you something far more valuable in return clarity, connection, and a deeper respect for the wild world we share.
Even if proper recycling systems existed, the real change starts much earlier, with our everyday habits. Traveling to places like Raja Ampat invites us to consume less, buy less, and simplify our lives. The islands naturally teach us that living with less brings more presence, more connection, and a deeper respect for the world around us.
